 Patio PROTECTING YOUR PATIO All concrete is porous and over time due to constant weathering it deteriorates. One of he main causes for concrete deterioration is water, so if the concrete can be protected it stands to reason that it will last longer. Water sealant should be applied as recommended by the manufacturer to extend the life of the slab. A good quality sealant should protect the concrete against moisture and salt penetration while allowing it to breath. The product should be clear (invisible) after it has dried, combat algae and fungus growth, and provides freeze-thaw stability. Sealants can be purchased from most concrete companies and at major hardware stores. Applying sealant also helps in minimizing "pop outs" on concrete surfaces. These pop outs are predominantly the result of salt use during the winter. Most sealants are designed to be applied with a hand pump deck type sprayer.
